A little help, when you need it
Upload a MIDI, choose your layout and Convert to open the editor. Optional track analysis and conversion decisions are in the collapsed Analyze MIDI section.
Open ConvertCreate and edit notes free on the timeline. Shift/Ctrl/Command-click to select more, then use Phrase tools. Undo restores one edit at a time.
Open EditPlay is your free keyboard. Practice follows a song with falling notes, A/B loops, click volume and count-in. 34 and 41 layouts unfold into separate row panels to keep overlapping tines visible. Free play does not record notes. Keymap settings works in both Play and Practice; use Apply left-to-right defaults to update an older saved map.
Open PracticeChoose a template or custom count, check tuning and geometry, and save a profile. Applying to a song keeps explicit note choices.
Open InstrumentsSuggest from Convert or Edit, review the decisions and apply as a new song copy. Geometry and speed estimates need physical testing.
Local saves, automatic recovery and every export are free. Download project backups to keep an extra copy of your work.

Back to creatingRecovery keeps your unfinished working draft on this device for free. A deliberate local saved version keeps a checkpoint in My songs. Download a portable project backup separately. Further edits do not overwrite that checkpoint. Find both in My songs; previous draft recovery opens a separate copy.
Open My songsYes. MIDI conversion, editing, practice, sheets, downloads and full video exports are free. No account, credits or payment are required. Optional donations help cover hosting and development without unlocking extra features.
Support the projectChoose 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K or experimental 8K, at 30 or 60 fps. Full-video exports are free at every supported quality. Check device support for free before exporting; the browser can use MP4 or WebM without lowering your chosen quality.
There is no fixed duration or estimated file-size cap. Your device still needs enough resources to complete the render, and the current exporter supports up to 5,000 notes. If rendering fails, your song stays available to try again.
Open VideoYes. Start with a 17-, 21-, 34- or 41-key layout, or build a custom instrument. Keymap settings in Play and Practice lets you change each tine's computer key. Your song keeps its instrument and bindings.

Starting tempo/meter changes preserve later imported changes. Position and length below use quarter-note beats; the sheet also shows the meter's bar/beat positions.
Click empty space to add a note. Drag notes across tines or beats, or drag either note edge to change its length. Right-click a note to delete it. Shift/Ctrl/Command-click selects multiple notes; dragging a selected note moves the group. Escape cancels a drag. Both views use the same physical tine order.

0 notes selected.
The phrase clipboard stays inside this tab. Copied notes keep relative spacing; pasted notes get new identities.
Range selection includes attacks at the start and excludes the end. Full note lengths are retained across the boundary. Range copies include their leading/trailing rests; other copies start at the first selected attack. Bar duplication inserts space, copies tempo/meter changes, and shifts later attacks/maps. Unsupported or ambiguous transpose/paste targets are reported. Each edit is one Undo action. Protection pins a note's tine and prevents thumb refinement from omitting it.
Suggest a version using two-thumb movement, recovery time, reach, rows and crossings. Suggestions are estimates from your geometry and calibration, not a physical-playability guarantee. Applying creates a separate song copy with its baseline and full report.
Relative geometry uses relative units; mm profiles use millimeters. Presets fill starting estimates. Check homes, reach and travel against your instrument. Hand preferences are soft preferences. Ringing notes do not hold a thumb in place. Recovery + distance/travel speed + row transition must fit between a thumb's strikes.
This version keeps pitch, octave, attack time, duration, velocity and tempo fixed. It can reassign a same-pitch physical tine or omit an unprotected note. Arpeggiation, adjacent-tine strums and pitch substitutions are not enabled. Protect notes above to pin their tines and keep them.
Open a song to suggest a refinement.
No refinement report yet.
Unchecking the saved-arrangement toggle restores its pre-refinement notes. If you edit the result, toggling is disabled so your work stays intact: regenerate from the current edits, or restore the baseline as a separate copy. Re-running from the saved baseline does not repeatedly delete notes. Reports and protection travel with downloaded projects. L/R are estimates; “!” marks an unresolved constraint.
Build your tuning without JSON. Edit a draft, audition a tine, then use it for new songs/MIDI or apply it to the open song. Drafts stay separate from your music; save a profile copy or download it before leaving.
Templates are starting examples. Check every pitch and position against your own kalimba. The 34 layout follows the two-row chart with four bass notes; the 41 layout follows its three-row C-tuning chart. Custom retunings can differ. Custom count, starting pitch and scale apply to Generate a custom count.
Each row is shown in its own band, with row 1 at the bottom. X moves a tine sideways; positive y raises it within its row. Tine widths are illustrative. Use the list to select overlapping tines. Row numbers start at 1.
Convert all coordinates using a scale you supply. No physical spacing is inferred. Thumb refinement uses these coordinates and treats hand preference as a soft preference.
Saved profiles are independent copies in this browser and address. Songs embed their own instrument. Changing a profile never changes other songs. Profile files preserve tine IDs, tuning and geometry.
Applying keeps note times and lengths. Retuning changes the sound of notes on those tines. Removed tines need an explicit replacement or deletion choice. Undo in Song studio restores the instrument, notes and key bindings together.
Tap or click the tines, or enable the computer keyboard and use the letters shown. Free playing does not add notes to your song. During song playback, the tines light up at each strike.
Create a blank song, load the demo or open a project to play its instrument.

Bindings save with this song and never change its tuning. Physical letter, number and punctuation keys are supported. Keys used for typing fields and browser shortcuts keep their normal behavior.
Some computer keyboards cannot detect every multi-key chord; touch/click remains available for all tines. Release a key to strike it again. Leaving the page clears held notes. Live volume affects free play; exported audio stays unchanged.
Octave shift preserves the pitch class when another octave exists. Clamp applies only outside the pitch range. Nearest-pitch substitution changes the music and is off by default. The note-count limit is a simple chord filter; use Thumb-friendly arrangement for movement refinement.
Accepts the original keys format or a versioned profile with tine IDs, pitches, labels, x/y positions and rows. Any key count is supported.

Parentheses group simultaneous notes. In the editor sheet, [1] is one quarter-note beat of length, [0.5] is an eighth note; rests are explicit. Bar/beat positions follow the meter. Octaves: , lower, plain = middle, º higher (repeat for further octaves).

Positions use quarter-note beats from 1, including in 6/8. B is excluded. Enable or apply after editing A/B. Only attacks inside the phrase repeat; sound fades out at B. Pausing/seeking stops the old sound; speed changes keep your song position. Practice loops do not change exported files. Speed still affects preview and video.
Clicks follow meter beats (six eighth-note clicks in 6/8), accenting each bar's first beat. Count-in uses full bars at the starting position's meter, tempo and speed, replacing the preview lead-in. It runs on Start/Replay, not on each loop or after seeking. Pause during count-in restarts it on Resume; later setting changes apply next start. Click volume also controls count-in. Playhead following changes only the timeline view. These settings are session-only and do not enter exports.
Support depends on your device. 8K is experimental; large exports may need a shorter song.
Landscape · 30 or 60 fps · sound included. No fixed duration or estimated file-size limit. Device support and note-count checks still apply. Your song stays on this computer during export.
